FIRST BISHOP OF UDAIPUR
Bishop Joseph Pathalil was born on January 26, 1937, at Nedumkunnam, Kottayam, Kerala. After his early education, he joined St. Theresa’s Minor Seminary, Ajmer, and later pursued his priestly studies at Papal Seminary, Pune. He was ordained a priest on September 21, 1963.
He served as Assistant Parish Priest at Mahuri, Parish Priest at Ambapada, and later at Dungarpur. On December 3, 1984, he was appointed the first Bishop of the newly erected Diocese of Udaipur, and received episcopal ordination on February 14, 1985. He led the Diocese for 27 years and retired from active episcopal ministry in 2012.
Prayer was at the heart of Bishop Joseph’s life. His simplicity, radiant smile, and deep faith left a lasting impression on those he served. He also chose to wear a tribal turban instead of the traditional mitre as a sign of his desire to identify closely with the local people.
He learned the Bhili language and contributed significantly to catechetical formation through works such as Vat No Divo, the Bhili Hymnal, and the Bhili New Testament NavoKarar. During his leadership, the Diocese expanded its mission stations and educational institutions, especially in rural areas.
Bishop Joseph also strongly promoted Small Christian Communities, catechetical education, and local vocations to priestly and religious life. His pastoral leadership helped strengthen the participation of the laity and the growth of the Diocese.
May his saintly soul rest in peace. May he continue to pray for and bless the Diocese of Udaipur.
